Descrizione Lavoro

Battery System Engineer (Structural Battery Modules)
Volta is a deep-tech start-up operating at the boundary between energy storage and advanced structural materials. We develop structural batteries that combine load‑bearing functionality with high energy density for demanding platforms. The result: unprecedented energy storage capabilities without electrochemical wizardry.
How We Work

Collective trust: We build trust with teammates, partners, and customers to move faster and deliver reliably.
Ownership: Results over titles. Act like a founder and take responsibility end‑to‑end.
Fearless exploration: We embrace daring challenges and new, unconventional paths; curiosity is our fuel
Creative ingenuity: We celebrate unconventional thinking, nurturing original ideas that turn constraints into transformative solutions
Reliable innovation: Ambitious ideas are only valuable when they meet real world needs and can be built, tested, and scaled.

What Defines Us

Customer‑centric development: Frequent customer feedback loops to shape requirements and validation plans.
Fast iteration: Tight build‑test‑learn cycles; we design, deliver, measure, take decision and iterate quickly.
Hands‑on approach: We prototype and test in‑house whenever possible.

What We Offer

Ownership & impact: From idea to prototype and product, you’ll help create and deliver impactful solutions, redefining industry standards.
Rapid growth: With maximum exposure to every step of the process and cutting‑edge customer platforms, you’ll thrive in a fast‑paced learning environment tackling complex real‑world challenges
Ambitious roadmap: Contribute to creating a new category of energy storage systems, deployable at scale across space, aeronautics, land, and maritime applications

Role Overview
You will lead the electrical design, build, and validation of Volta structural battery modules, turning individual load‑bearing cells into complete, application‑ready modules. The core of the role is module architecture (series/parallel topology), high‑current interconnect design (multi‑functional busbars, flex links, PCBs, harnessing), and BMS integration (hardware + firmware‑facing interfaces).
This role sits at the intersection of classical battery pack design and structural constraints (load paths, stiffness, vibration, mass). You will work closely with the cell and mechanical teams to create solutions that are safe, manufacturable, and testable.
Key Responsibilities

Series/parallel configuration, voltage/current targets, balancing strategy, serviceability.
Electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and interface definitions to the host system.
Support in the cell chemistries scouting and selection according to final customer requirements and technological state‑of‑the‑art.
Design and take ownership of module interconnect system manufacturing:

PCB design for sensing and interconnect functions (cell taps, temperature, current, HV/LV routing as needed).
Design for low resistance, controlled inductance, thermal behavior, and mechanical robustness.

Integrate BMS hardware and BMS‑facing software interfaces:

Define measurement chain (cell voltages, current sensing, temperature), protections, and fault handling logic.
Implement and/or support communication (e.g., CAN, SPI, I2C) and bring‑up/debug of the system.

Validate designs through prototyping and testing:

Create test plans and corporate procedures for performance, safety, durability, and structural/electrical interactions.
Run experiments, analyze data, and iterate designs based on evidence.

Support scale‑up from prototype to production‑ready modules:

DFM/DFS inputs, assembly procedures, tolerance stack‑ups, and documentation.

Ensure compliance awareness mapping relevant standards and certification constraints early (UL/IEC/ISO as applicable) and design with them in mind.

Contribute to Volta’s procurement and decision‑making processes by driving product development strategies toward fast‑deployable, purpose‑built proof‑of‑concepts and exceptionally well‑engineered products.
Who You Are
MSc (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field. Exceptional BSc candidates with strong hands‑on battery pack experience are welcome (e.g., Formula Student/EV racing, e‑motorcycles, UAV/eVTOL, university research projects).

Battery pack or module design experience, from concept through build and test (not only simulation).
High‑current interconnect design: busbars, terminal design, harnessing, fusing, and connector selection.
PCB design experience and comfort with embedded/electrical debugging (schematics, layout, bring‑up).
BMS architecture fundamentals: AFE, preferred MCU and ADC, User Interface, safety, measurement, balancing, protections, and fault logic; practical experience with at least one BMS stack is a strong plus.
Comfort with communication protocols used in battery systems (e.g., CAN, SPI, I2C) and basic firmware‑facing workflows.
Ability to plan and run tests and make engineering decisions from data (instrumentation, logs, failure analysis).
CAD proficiency for mechanical integration constraints and interface definition.

Preferred

Thermal and/or structural simulation experience (Altair, ABAQUS, ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar).
Familiarity with aerospace/defense development constraints (documentation rigor, verification mindset, traceability).
Experience working with composite or structural materials interfaces (e.g., conductive interfaces, bonding, fasteners) in an electrical context.
